1) Message boards : Science : Detector bugs (Message 1468)

I'm no going to tolerate being caller lier and being insulted as an American.

How much longer Dagorath is going to insult new members with moderators not intervening?

The rules clearly state:
"No messages intended to annoy or antagonize other people, or to hijack a thread.
No messages that are deliberately hostile or insulting.
No abusive comments involving race, religion, nationality, gender, class or sexuality."

My enthusiasm for this project is rapidly disappearing. I saw another active USA member who severed his ties with this project just because of this BS being allowed to happen.

Over and out.

I'm not talking about #506.
I'm talking about this:

vs that:

As for the BOINC map, I'm looking at 24hrs averages and not instant. I would not call 24 hrs "a very short period of time."

Really?
You just showed a compelling difference in your above post on Sept 17th.
You can also compare the readings on your map with government network readings also available online.

From what I see so far on this blog, the detector overestimates the low, background radiation some (under 50%?) while it underestimates high levels by a factor of 2.

This is not necessarily bad as I saw evidence that the esteemed Terra's MKS-05 can underestimate doses 5 fold!

However, since the project wants to monitor the low levels, is it possible to improve results by subtracting the GM tube's own noise of 1 cps or by some other constant adjustments?

Note sure how the adjustments would be deployed across the different hardware versions though.

Interesting thread. I find the comments from phys very constructive and the developers should use his expertise to improve the project. Were those bugs corrected in the software?

On the other hand, Dagorath's loud mouth is very offensive and I'm frankly surprised he was not banned form here. His comments are totally off mark and he scared some potential volunteers away (Tino Ruiz).

One more thing. Can one of the new batch sensors be ordered as a kit or be able to be taken apart? I would like to experiment with alternative GM tubes (off line and off grid only).

Also, If I purchase a few as gifts for friends, will they be able to register the detectors with the BOINC network separately from my own account?

Thanks and looking forward to the new batch.

Please let us know when we can order the new batch. I would like to participate in this (Alabama, USA). Also, wouldn't it be possible to continuously produce the detectors, stockpile them, and take orders as they came in? If you spread a word about it in Japan, the demand for these should be mind boggling. I see only one right now on the map.

I was able to find these specs for the GM tube:

Parameters: SBM-20 / SBM-20U
Minimum Anode Resistor (meg ohm): 1.0
Recommended Anode Resistor (meg ohm): 5.1
Recommended Operating Voltage (volts) : 400
Operating Voltage Range (volts): 350 - 475
Initial voltage (volts): 260 - 320
Plateau length (volts): at least 100
Maximum Plateau Slope (%/100 volts): 10
Minimum Dead Time (at U=400V, micro sec): 190
Working range (mkR/s): 0.004 - 40
Working range (mR/h): 0.014 - 144
Gamma Sensitivity Ra226 (cps/mR/hr): 29
Gamma Sensitivity Co60 (cps/mR/hr): 22
Inherent counter background (cps): 1
Tube Capacitance (pf): 4.2
Life (pulses): at least 2*1010
Weight (grams): 10 / 9

Looks like 144 mR/hr (1440 uSv/hr) is the limit. That is impressive for a single tube, I guess due to small tube size.

After the saturation event, there should be no counts anymore (DC only), thus counter will show zero. This is how typical GM counters work, unless you measure DC current also to indicate and report over-range.

Thanks TJM!

Any ideas on the upper limit of detection (ie saturation of GM tube)? That could be important in an event of nuclear explosion only though.

Interesting. Can the detector work as a standalone detector not connected to the grid? I would like to experiment with various sources, but I would hate to feed those readings to the grid.

Also, what is the maximum range of detection? Would detector measure close to 0 when over range (like some simple single tube GM detectors?)?
