At the moment, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I did not like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my thoughts. Claudius wished to have a large army. He expected men to volunteer to participate. Many men just didn't need to fight in battles. They didn't desire to leave their wives and families. As you could have got, not many men signed-up. That made Claudius mad. So what happened? He had a ridiculous idea. He thought that when men were not married, they would not mind joining the military. Therefore Claudius decided not to let anymore marriages. Teenagers believed his new law was harsh. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly was not planning to support that law! Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favorite actions was to marry couples. I maintained performing marriages -- privately, needless to say, even with Emperor Claudius handed his law. It was really very interesting. Imagine a little candlelit room with just the bride and groom and myself. We would say the words of the ceremony, listening even while for the ways of soldiers. One evening, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank heavens the couple I was marrying escaped over time. I used to be caught. (Not quite as light on my legs as I applied to be, I guess.) I was placed in prison and told that my punishment was death. I tried to keep cheerful. And have you any idea what? Amazing things happened. Many young people came to the prison to visit me. They put flowers and notes around my window. They wanted me to understand that they, also, believed in-love. One of these teenagers was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father helped her to see me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk all night. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that used to do the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going forward with the-secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend just a little note thanking her for her friendship and respect. Browse here at partnersitesoexd blog on CULTUREINSIDE to read where to look at this view. I signed it, 'Love from your Valentine.' I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. Now, each year on this day, people remember. If you think any thing, you will likely desire to explore about Case | Journal | CaringBridge. But most significantly, they think of love and friendship. And when they think about Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand-in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they understand that love can not be beaten!. |
