On behalf of Ryszard Korczyk [ryszard.korczyk]:

First of all I would like to apologise to everyone for such a massive delay.

When we started collecting money for 3rd batch of detectors we decided, a little too enthusiastically, to release a new revision of the detector. We've had mastered the manufacturing process for ver.2. Version 3 had been released in a small prototypical batch. Version 3 also appealed to many people visually, and this fact weighed heavily on our decision. Nobody however realised how long would it take to prepare a longer production run. There also were a couple of issues that were discovered in beta version, that also needed to be taken care of.

Another cause for the delay was our attempt to reduce manufacturing costs. We do all the production on our own and some processes, especially preparation of transformers and chassis takes quite a lot of time. The chassis looks interesting, but it requires processing on a CNC machine. Caps require reaming and the openings need to be drilled through. Lastly, the labeling sticker needs to be applied and a hole for LCD display needs to be cut out. The printed circuit boards are also manufactured by us. Reputable manufacturing workshops demanded prohibitively high prices for production of such relatively small batch, with profitability threshold at 1000+ boards. Smaller and cheaper workshops on the other hand had high defect rates. PCBs manufactured by them had short circuits, rotated elements and overheated laminates. We decided therefore to manufacture PCBs by ourselves using a template for application of soldering paste and an oven for actual soldering. This too proved to be difficult at first. Too much paste on microcontroller's pins caused short-circuits. In effect I've had to remove the processor from each PCB, clean it, and solder it again (here's another delay). Before installing the PCB in chassis, it's edges need grinding, so that it fits in the pipe.

In other words, a couple of unplanned issues summed up into a bigger delay. On top of that, I planned to work on detectors after my day job. I assumed I'd have to work 8 hours a day, but my employee pressed me hard, and I often had to devote more than 10 hours a day to my job. There were days where I would start at 7 a.m. and finish at 2 a.m. the following day. During such periods there was no chance to do anything with detectors, sometimes even for a week or so.

How I am going to amend the situation: I am in no way backing away from the project. I commited to it, and I'm going to finish what I started. Trust me, there is still quite a lot of work with these detectors. Things at work start coming back to normal, and I can now expect to have a couple of hours each day to work on them. I'm planning to take a couple of days off too. I also started to organise a team of people who will help me to press forward. I also need to evaluate if I can utilise Szopler's and kotfryc's eagerness to help. Just today I have prepared a software update which enables displaying on the LCD converter's voltage, USB voltage and USB communication status. That should help in debugging if any users report problems. It's enough to hold down the button during powering up, and debug data will be displayed instead of 'Radioactive@home'. This update also delayed the deliveries as I didn't want to ship detectors without any means of diagnosing them.

Schedule:

Approximately 45 detectors are completed, 40 PCB's are ready without transformers and waiting to be tested. Another 50 PCBs with RC elements and 50 empty PCBs. We are also expecting a shipment of another 100 PCBs from the manufacturer. I have a dozen or so transformers ready for installation. Next Sunday I plan on manufacturing a number of those, as I managed to optimise this process recently. I declare to make 10 daily, but I want to do as much as 20 if possible. However, there might be days when I'm travelling due to my daytime job (Dec 6th and 7th). Next Saturday I plan to devote entirely to detectors' production. Having two other people to help I expect to do at least 40 pcs. I am also constantly looking for ways to improve our processes.

Last, but not least, please hold your emotions. This does not work well on morale. I admit I screwed up, and I am doing whatever I can to do my part. Please take notice, that we do not profit from manufacturing detectors, we donate our time and try to make detectors as cheap as possible, so that everyone can afford them. Our detectors are much more sophisticated than QCN detectors, which consist of a cable, a chassis and a PCB with an accelerometer and a couple of elements.

From now on I am going to provide you with daily status updates.

Getting back to soldering USB cables.

Und die deutsche Übersetzung (Here's the German translation):

Last, but not least: Bitte haltet Eure Emotionen im Zaum.

Keep the soldering iron hot! ;-)
Don't worry about the delay.
I would like to get some technical infos about the device. Version 1 was counting Gamma-Radiaton as far i remember, does Version 3 the same?

Greetings to Poland, have a nice Nikolas-Day and thx to Saenger for translation and service!

Thanks for the update!!! Actually I'm was't that much confused as I understand what means having high workload of daytime job.
I just can say to everyone who is waiting for detector (as I'm too) be patient.
I know we put money in it, but is non profit project. Any proffesional detector with PC connection cost 2000EUR and not 27EUR.
And want to say to the team (Ryszard, Szopler and anyone else working on the project) big thanks for such nice project as this one!!!
Lets hope some day maybe we can make kits or so to offload the work from you guys .

In my opinion main problem was lack of information: "Houston, we have a problem". It's normal to have delay, technical issues, lack of time etc. Life is a life. Hope with a couple of weeks we can got more green points on map :)

Another info from Ryszard:

I have two news, a good one and a bad one.

To start with the good one - the Microchip Company has provided us the VID/PID numbers on which our detector can be recognized by the operating system and the BOINC software. Each USB device must have this numbers. VID determines the manufacturer, PID defines the product.

With V2 detectors we use numbers which was released under certain conditions by the creator of the vUSB library. Third series of detectors do not use vUSB so we can't use the past. We could use the Microchip test example, but in the long run this is not consistent with the libraries license. Microchip heavily delayed granting sub-licenses and the current series was originally with that temporary IDs.

The bad news is that it stop the shipment until we have all the detectors with the target VID/PID. We want to avoid a situation where we have a mess in this numbers. The TJM operate an update that will allow operation of the detectors with the target ID numbers.

Pause in the shipping don't affect the production of sensors and so over the weekend I have done:
- 50 pcs PCB with SMD components,
- 30 pcs PCB with THT components,
- 20 pcs with USB cables,
- 30 pcs of trafos was turned.

By the way, I try to analyze the duration of the work subsequent stages. And for example manual soldering SMD parts takes 10 minutes, the same thing with reflow heater takes 6 minutes but after soldering that way sometimes require amendments. I think the next pieces will be completely assembled by hand.

That's the original,
and now for my own part:

A big THANK YOU to Ryszard for doing all this despite his heavy workload in the RL-job!

In spring, 2012 our team "Wetterboard" has ordered 30 sensors from you. As in your forum is to be read, the parts have already received a lot. Against it our team is without further information. How is the state? Exists in 2013, in 2014.... In 2022 hope?
The patience is to an end.

In our case the order was only 2 detectors (ordered and paid in August 2012) - for testing (could be much more in future), but we would also appreciate some news in this case. It is not necessary to have detailed info about particular orders, but would be nice to know at least something like "we already shipped bunch of XYZ detectors and XY % paid during "some month" 2012 will be shipped this month."

thanks

In my case, I ordered 1 in July 2012, got confirmation on August 19, 2012, sent payment on August 21, 2012, and then nothing.... I know I sent a PM asking if payment was received (because my boinc email address is different than my paypal address, but I did include message with boinc email address and mailing address with payment) and to confirm that I was still getting one...but haven't gotten a reply.

I only check on here whenever I happen to start boinc manager on my the machine with my v2 detector and see a new-ish notice from the project. Which isn't very often since its a 32-bit machine sitting in corner of storage room... (or if I get an automated email saying my detector has disappeared...)

I'm still hopeful that I'll have a computer at work to use v3 detector on when it finally does arrive.

Does the app work on FreeBSD?

Yep, with just minor changes I was able to build FreeBSD version.
However, most probably you'll have to compile it by yourself, I don't have FreeBSD box right now.

Three months have passed since Christmas. But nothing happened. No geiger counter, no definite info on the shipping date, no updated schematics, no apologies, nothing.

Just to quote Ryszard Korczyk [ryszard.korczyk] on Dec 5th, 2012:
"From now on I am going to provide you with daily status updates."

Still looking forward to my ordered detector but rather disappointed.

Hello to You,

I just passed the last conversion here in the forum and I'm afraid to ask my question:

Is there still a possibility to order new sensors?
I'm a little bit confused and don't know, what will happen if I send f.e. the amount for one sensor and shipping to Your account...

Are You still porducing or planning a new batch of sensor?
I know, that there is more demand for sensors...

BTW: Its an great idea! Hold on!

Best regards, olsen_gg (Team:Planet3DNow!)

By the way - how many of sent sensors are working on-line?
If you have a sensor and is lying in the drawer - is a useless for you and for other part of our community. Do some effort and install software & add sensor to the map.

Exactly...
Unfortunately, about 40% of sensor are never was connected or are flagged as "experimental" and cannot be displayed on map...

I don't understand why some users newer us it with BOINC...

There are a more issues with project. In my opinion there should be fitted 2 sensors - one indoor and one outdoor. Unfortunately at this moment sensors are just for indoor and we have no details about "physical environment" of sensor. It will act different in-house, back of 2 or 3 walls from steel from reinforced concrete with 24 cm thickness, at 7 stage of 11 stage high tower and different at the second stage of wooden house.

Back to the percentage of connected sensors - it will be good for you (yes, I mean you - person, who have sensor and don't connect it to the net). When "shit happends" and people can see 4-5 (even yellow) dots on the map there will be instantly buzz in internet/media/press. And you will hear that even if you are not checking sensor itself. If in you are is connected only 1 sensor people can think: oh, that's again situation when somebody is testing his unit...

Have to say some history:
I was at work, was sunny bright day. I'm come back to home and first think what I'm realize when enter to the room was very quick ticking from my sensor. My Girlfriend was sitting in that room and don't realize what's going on. When I'm asking her: "hey, you dont realize something happends ?" She say: "I know sensor is ticking". And she was sitting in the room and don't call me...
So people does NOT react. That can be your mother, sister etc. Luckille that was mistake allarm, as my sensor was located on the windowsill and alarm was switched by sun radiation and temperature just back of window glass. But in bad and real scenario that can be worse :/

You are right.
BUT... We have had interesting situation couple of weeks ago (30 and 31 July).
Somebody in Poland put a rumour on press that somewhere in Russia (or Bielarus) a nuclear plant explode... Unfortunately, on the same day official government site (National Atomic Energy Agency) was under maintenance... We reach our visitors record on our map.
Some people are care and some people are found our project sensible :)

Well, there is not much info here how are you proceeding with the current batch, what and how is being made and mainly how many detectors are being prepared, so please find here some reflections how to speed up the manufacturing and delivery of the sufficient number detectors for all the people willing to participate in the project....

1) Things that can be be cheaply ordered should not be made manually - R@H team should concentrate on more important and more profitable activities...:

1A) PCB: you would be quite surprised, how cheep can be some PCB shops even here in Europe:
for instance series of 200 pcbs of size 100x20mm (I estimate the size of the PCB in the detector...) double sided, through hole plated with gold surface and solder mask would cost as little as Euro 1,90 per PCB (all costs included, postage excluded...)

If you go for 50 pieces series, price is about Euro 4,- per PCB (all costs included, postage excluded...)

1B) Assembly: price of SMD soldering is not so prohibitive either. If we take a series of 50 PCBs and the number of SMD components is let's say 25 per board, and you SUPPLY the SMD components, price of the soldering will be about Euro 8,- per PCB.... and you can order PCB and assembly together, postage is invoiced only 1x....

... and of course, for bigger series the price goes rapidly down....

2) On the other hand there are things that are (very) expensive to order like: through hole components soldering, cables, mounting in the boxes etc....: this should be done by the R@H team or parts delivered as a kit to the end user for assembly (of course price of the finished product and kit will be different...)

3) LCD display should be optional...

4) Microcontroller should be programmed only with a boot loader and user should be able to update firmware... (is it already a case today ?)

5) Box: (...just a brainstorming...)
- have you considered to use some already made cheap box (for instance Raspberry Pi box, electrical-installation waterproof box or other suitable boxes...) ?
- have you considered 3D printing of the boxes?

Best regards,

miki_e

Hello all... I am new to this project and would like information about how one goes about getting a detector? It sounds like they are all spoken for with this batch of 300.
