I tried to order a detector but the PayPal contributions page is in British pounds, not euros. Am I doing something wrong or is the contributions page setup wrong?

When donating via paypal I'm not getting any chance to put in my shipping address or anything else at all? I got a "message to recipient" link in my PayPal-form, that opened a long text field, and even the title was long enough to fit my address in ;) But you can nevertheless contact Krtysztof per pm as well ;) ____________ Gruesse vom Saenger

You are still going to provide assembled detectors later, right? I've not ordered yet as my soldering skills are not that great, though I could probably manage it (only soldering is required, not programming the chip, correct?).
ID: 166 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
In our case "kit" means that you have connect Geiger tube to board (without or with soldering - depend of you), controller we send programmed. No soldering skills required. For example, my prototype is connected to g. tube using to cables (device side) and using this on tube side*. Another detail is that our kit doesn't have ABS box now, we still looking for cheap and accurate one...

We call those alligator clips, because it looks like an aligator's mouth with all the teeth. :) So we get that board as on the home page, with the parts already on it. All we have to do is plug in usb cable and like you said clip some wirres to the tube and attach them where the red and black wires are. Correct ? I would not worry too much about an ABS box (added Expense), my whole 5 system computer is built on a rack, without a case. Maybe in the future you could offer two versions, 1 in a nice box for more money or one as-is with no box.

OK, I've placed my order, I hope it's not too late!
ID: 169 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
We called it "krokodylki" which is very similar ;) Yes, you correct in your describtion and yes we would like to offer nice boxy version later but we can't do this now for legal reasons (all "boxed" stuff have to be passed through expensive tests in laboratories before it can go to market). Also we still considering more expensive version - boxed and with GPS module fitted, which can generate little profit for use for selling basic version cheaper to countries where wages are low and government are not very friendly to their citizen's. ____________ Regards, Krzysztof 'krzyszp' Piszczek Android Radioactive@Home Map Android Radioactive@Home Map - donated My Workplace

FWIW, I just discovered (too late for me) that clicking the Donate link on the BOINC project homepage doesn't let you enter any extra information, but the Donate link on the main project page gives you a chance to enter a message. Didn't see it before as it was off the bottom of the screen.

We are under process of creating map (based on google maps service) to getting locations of detectors (you can see progress on you host settings in your account).
ID: 181 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
I don't like the idea of GPS either, for the reasons Krunchin-Keith mentions. However, expecting volunteers to fill in location information is far from foolproof. Most crunchers probably don't know their latitude and longitude and don't know where to get it. Many will be unaware of the need to manually enter the lat and long in their account information. You can plaster the request to enter the info all over the project website and send them emails requesting the info but some still won't catch on because it's just not a standard thing to do in BOINC. The best way to get their attention and motivate them to enter the lat and long would be to advertise the need all over the website, send them an email or 2 and give them 0 credit for results until they provide the lat and long. But then what if a volunteer moves to a new location? Maybe GPS is the best way. Customs officials will never know what's on the detectors and what they're used for. Just call them a radiation detector and don't mention the GPS capability. You'll fly right under the radar.

That is so cool!! I was on Google maps earlier looking for a locator and didn't find one there. Thanks for that link. Now I know the coordinates of my garden shed. It's latitude 49.663638143542784, longitude -112.79833674430847. In degrees/minutes/seconds it's lat 49/39/49.0962, long -112/47/54.0132.

Here's the places for the detectors in my order: That's kool. Did you order a bunch for team-mates or friends in the same area, I guess to save on postage when the project ships them ?
ID: 192 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
That's kool. I organized this bunch on several German team fora, P3D, S.G, B@H, RKN and some others who read there as well joined in, for example those 6 in northern Germany are from some weather forum, two of it's members are as well active in the S.G- and RKN-Forum. Perhaps we can save even more postage, if one of the polish guys can manage to cross the border for sending them, but I think that would only be the cherry on the cake. ____________ Gruesse vom Saenger
ID: 193 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
That's kool. Actually i though of doing this, have a bunch shipeed to me here in the USA, hopefully less cost for a bunch at once than one at a time from Poland, then i would redistribute them here in the USA as i could mail them to any location here for 5 USD, which i think per unit would be less than 15 euros which is about 23 USD even if i added back the one time shipping fee divided over number of units. This might make more US people be inclined to join up. I'll have to think on this some. Maybe after my detector arrives and I see it working.

The prices were per kilo, and Krzysztof said he thinks 5 should fit in a parcel with 1kg weight. And heavier parcels are not as much more expansive as they get heavy. ____________ Gruesse vom Saenger

This is best way for shipping over borders and is also easier to manage for us. That is great. I think I can do this. - When you have some free time if you could give me an estimate of the shipping of sending some here to the US, like say 5, 10, 25 or 50 or some such numbers, I can better guess at what I can do. Euro prices are fine, i can convert. PM me if you wwant to. - I probally could buy a batch and then resell them here at cost, no markup. And since part of my daily job is mailing packages, it would be little bother to me to remail these to US residents. once I had a batch and payment, they could have one in 2-3 days. for USA residents: If anyone is interested in the next batch, drop me a PM and I'll start a list and we can work out the details of payment.
ID: 197 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
I just check postage prices for parcel up to 5kg (I think, this is enough for 50 detectors, maybe little be less), with value up to 5k PLN (about 1250 euro)to USA. Polish Post web service show cost as about 40 euro (165PLN).

Can we sign up somewhere to get email when we can order detectors again?
ID: 205 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Can we sign up somewhere to get email when we can order detectors again? For those in the US send me a PM of your interest. I will be buying a batch after the first batch is done and sent out. Size of batch will be determined by number of pre-interests I receive. I'll PM everyone in my inbox that PM'd me and you can pay me back then and send your address, make sure you turn on email notices and you'll get one when I PM. When I get the batch I'll reship to those that paid me, only US addresses only. I don't know the exact price yet but it should be slightly cheaper than buying one at a time direct as it will save some on the batch by having them shipped all at once over one at a time. I can reship USPS Priority mail once I receive them and that will only be 2-3 days delivery. That will be easy for me as shipping is part of my daily job. In case anyone wonders, you can trust me. Check stats, i've been around boinc since 2004, Kaptain of team USA on every project, manager/moderator of team USA website, Moderator at MalariaControl.net, GPUgrid and Correlizer and an alpha tester. I'm pretty committed to boinc and not just another anonymous name.

I'd give him my email address, it's easier to send mails to a list of people than to use PM for that ;) In case anyone wonders, you can trust me. Can we sign up somewhere to get email when we can order detectors again? For now I think i'd like ot use PM messages, as when i get around to actually filling of order I might be doing it here at the office, early in the morning, and I would have easier access to my PM box. Also that keeps things separate as my email ahs lots of stuff in it, something might get lost in the clutter. It might be harder to notify 50 people at once, if I have that many, I'll have to do a few at a time, but I think overall it will make things easier on me keeping it separate and accessible. I generally too check project sites more often than email.
Thanks, yeah there seems to a large body of water between us. One day though in the far off future I'll paddle my kayak across to the other side.
