OK Boincerz

I am making a list of U.S.A. Residents interested in detectors.

Here's the deal.

I will order 25 or 50 depending on how many pre-interests I get. Once I pay for them i'll know an exact price, due to exchange rates. Then I'll start taking payments, first come, first serve. Once I get a batch, i'll reship them via USPS Priority Mail (2-3 Day) delivery.

Why do this you ask ?

A detector costs $25 euro plus $15 euro shipping from the project and each one has to have a bunch of export paperwork on it. The exchange rate was 0.6787 so mine cost me $58.93 USD.

If I buy 25 or 50 the shipping is $40 euro / 58.93 USD and divide that over 25/50 orders it is 1 or 2 USD.

I will also buy some alligator clip leads and supply two each with each detector, this will give you everything you need except a USB cable. I'm guessing most people have an extra one from something laying around or that is more easily found in single pieces at local stores. The clip leads I found at Radio Shack, 8 for $8 including tax. I saw some on the internet about same price, slightly cheaper. Our store buys a lot from the Radio Shack so I'm trying to get a deal on buying 7 or 13 packs, enough for all the detectors. I'll have that worked out by the time the next batch is ready to order. The price may change, as the ones I chose may not fit, I need to wait until I get my detector and G-M tube first to see, there are some large ones that cost slightly more.

Part of my job is shipping and mailing, so I already have the experience and resources to handle this task, been doing this 29 years. I can get labels from work where we buy those in 600 packs, so they cost 0.04 cents each. Printer ink is less than 1 cent a label.

I'm donating my time to do this, this will reduce the effort the project has to make, it will be lees on them to fill out one export doument and ship one package instead of 25/50 single ones. Also you don't have to buy more clip leads than you need.

At the moment here is the cost
Kit 25 euro = 36.83 USD
Shipping 40 euro = 58.93 USD per 25 = 2.34 or per 50 = 1.17
Mailing US $5.00 Flat Rate to all 50 States
Clip Leads $8.00 / 8 = $1 each

==25= ==50=
36.83 36.83 Detector and G-M Tube
02.34 01.17 Inbound Postage
05.00 05.00 Postage
02.00 02.00 Two Clip Leads (These will be optional)
00.05 00.05 Label and Ink
===== =====
46.22 45.05 Cost USD

58.93 58.93 Original price
46.22 45.50 less cost
===== =====
12.71 13.43 Savings !!!

If you live in the USA and are interested, send me a PM message, nothing fancy just say you are interested. This will be easiest for me to keep a list. When the time comes i'll PM you. I can accept checks in the mail drawn on a US bank or payment via PayPal, note that my PayPal account does not accept credit card payments so if you need to you should transfer funds now to your paypal account from your bank so they are to send when the time comes. You can give me your address at time of payment.

You can check up on me if you want, my name, at least I think so, is pretty well known in the boinc communities.
I am kaptain of team USA, visit our website and you can check any project and see I am the team founder listed for this team.
I have been with BOINC since back in 2004 and do a lot of alpha and beta testing. See MalariaControl, GPUgrid or Correlizer where I am listed as moderator and volunteer tester.

I'm up to 10 interested persons now.
-
As before i will notify each by PM, i've got all your messages saved in the PM inbox so it makes it easy for me to see everyone. You can cancel at anytime, there is no obligation to pay for one jsut by saying you are interested, as it may be some time before they are ready and i know peoples situations can change by then, of course if you don't pay, you won't get a sensor. I'd say wait until; i contact you, you can decline then and i'll just cross you off the list and the next in line can have yours.

Just to make sure I understand your intentions Keith. You will order 25 or 50, but you need a minimum of 25 pre orders to make the order correct?

Let's say it's taking a really long time for that to happen, are you / will you at some point possibly reduce the number ordered?

My reasoning is, I appreciate you trying to help everyone out especially on the cost of the shipping but if it takes 6 months for 25 people to commit to you, Id rather not wait that long if possible.

Thank you

Message 356 - Posted: 20 Oct 2011 | 14:41:00 UTC - in response to Message 344.

NO , I don't need any specific number of pre-orders.

I have enough money to buy 25 myself I think it was, I set aside $1,000 in my paypal account from my savings, which when people start sending me money I get my money back so it is no problem and I can put it back in savings. If I sell no more by the time the sensors arrive, i'll ship the 14, then when someone else wants one i'll have some on hand to immediately send them one, after payment of course. I'm not committed to having them all sold before they get here. The only commitment is you pay for it before i ship it. And at this point there is no commitment on the pre-order list, when i say send money, if it never arrives, you don't get one, if it does you get one when i get the sensors. At the moment you are just reserving your place in line, first in, first out.

I've already indicated to the project I can send money now, at had that set aside when I made the announcement, but they are not ready for it yet. If they are going to do another per-order that takes a month to collect monies, i can have all of you pre-apy me and then order 25 + 14. The advance will become future participants won't have to wait as long once I have a supply of sensors.

I'm confident in the furure there will be more orders. I think some people are juSt waiting to see what happens with the first batch participants.

At the moment the hold up is the project is not taking money, they said they were going to make some kind of change to the device, this may affect cost is my guess.

And you are FREE to buy one yourself directly from them and not me when they take orders. I'm just trying to save everyone a little money and also the project people from doing 25/50 sets of export paperwork to ship 25/50 sensors, 1 order the only have to do 1. When I get them I can ship them pretty quickly, and an additional 2-3 days for mailing time is not going to kill anyone after having waited this long already.

When I get a new cost from the project, I will be able to get a new exchange rate and price for USA residents. Please be patient and wait, I expect to have this by mid-month.

They are in the process of pricing parts for the new configuration build for the 2nd units. I won't know until they give everyone that figure.

Should be similiar to previous price.

I will contact those that previously sent me a PM message when it is time to send monies, you can of course pay anytime after I get a price, but orders will be filled on a first paid basis. Read as if you wait too long, you might miss out.

At this point there are about 17 committed.

** One problem I forsee here. Do to the delay in this order, the parts gathering time and the build time, the project has estimated shipping late Januray. Depending on how long this taks if the delivery drags in to February, I go on a pre-planned vacation around the middle week of February. This may cause a shipment delay from me, but i'm hoping I get them before that. I need time to repackage and label and this needs to be before I prepare for vacation. I just ask everyone to be patient if the two conflict.

Note I still do not have my detector yet here from first batch, nearing two weeks now. This is why I say there may be a conflict.

If they sent it via standard carrier service (ie not expedited / Airmail or anything like that) it could take a few more weeks. Let's not forget the extreme efficiency of customs as well :x

I have ordered parts from overseas before and have seen them in as little as a week and a half, and same thing, same place, 4 weeks. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

It'll get to you, eventually.

Thanks for doing this for us Keith.

If we get a delay, I'm in a similar situation. I go on vacation mid-February for a week to two weeks.

Such is life...

Krzy, did you have to fill out a customs form? If so, what did you say these were on it? I have had electronics stuff sent to me from overseas in the past which errr... may have been an issue with customs, but they labeled it electronics kit or scrap electronics and it went right through. Given your aparatus is in a few pieces, it could easily do the same thing Im thinking if you have probs with our stupid customs over here across the pond.

For USA residents, please wait.

Until I or the other 4 get our dectors or the project finds out what happened, we are on hold, but Krzysztof has agreed to hold 25 detectors for us.

I will NOT be collecting money yet until we know status but I am still making a list 18 so far.

Message 603 - Posted: 9 Dec 2011 | 23:51:08 UTC

I got mine !!!

Attached to my stack and powered on. Here goes.

Photo to come tomorrow.

I asked the post office man. Brief sort of explanation. Mail is sorted into slow to fast classes, the more you pay, the faster it moves. Sometimes in the movement of mail, the faster classes take up all the space or weight allotment, so the slow class (which ours was sent by) gets bumped, which can happen more than once. When it gets to customs the same thing happens and it could be weeks before a pile of slow class is cleared a few a day, most likely as in our case the delay was being "slow class" and customs.

He showed me one "express" package that came in from Japan today, only taking 5 days to clear and get here from there.

-

I'm paying Krzysztof tonight for our next 25 detectors less shipping.

I asked him to check on a better method of shipping, maybe costing a little more. Here we have three classes above "slow", Priority takes about 6-10 days, "Express mail" which takes about 3-6 days and Global takes 1-2 days. I don't know if they have the exact same names in Poland, but i asked for him to check on some other methods and give me some prices. I'll pick one I think that will be faster than 6 weeks, but not cost us when divided between 25 detectors as much as a new car. Everyone still has thier palce in line, i'll collect funds between now and shipemnt time, i'm not worried about those.

As of now I have 20 spoken for. When the list gets to 25 i'll still take "pre-orders" in case someone drops off or doesn't pay, if an opening opens up you get moved ahead, othewise the pre-orders will be for a third batch when the proejct announces it.

I just sent them 675 Euros for 25 detectors, this works out to $925.83 USD which works out to $37.0332 each so far. When we settle on a shipping method and cost i let everyone know. Add to this also $5.00 for me to remail them in the us, by US Priority mail flat rate box, anywhere in the US is 2-3 day delivery. I get the boxes free from the post office and they are self sealing, so all i need is a label and those can be printed using the online service, so all i have is a little cost in labels and ink. the flat rate box is $4.95 so i added 0.05 for the label and ink (each).

I sent out several hundreds of packages this way this year from work, and no compalints about damages, lost or late deliveries.

i'll notify those on the list by pm with a paypal address when it is time to pay.

Sounds good, Keith.

A suggestion - hopefully you'll put a piece of tape over each end and the "self sealing" flap on those Priority Mail boxes.

I have shipped out easily a hundred or more, and found that the seal doesn't always hold that well. So to be safe, when I put the label on the outside, I make sure the tape covers the end of the flap to keep it closed.

Looking forward to getting a detector!

Does anyone want a partially non-working detector.

See http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=63

You'll have to fix it.

I don't have the time or the patience after an extra six week wait, now to fool with this. I've got other problems that need my attention.

OK, this is gone, I gave it away. The new receipient will try to fix it, I wish them luck.

---

Back to the list, I've checked it twice as some people made changes. The count is now 19 sold, 6 available.

I'm still waiting on details for next shipment, so I don't have exact costs yet, but don't worry they are paid for and your place in line is reserved. I'll still take care of shipinng these as I promised.

I'm still waiting for a figure from the project, they tell me that it they are going to build our 25 detectors first, then they can box them up and get a cost as they need the weight and size of box. I'm told it will be about 2 weeks from when they get all the required parts. Best guess, don't hold them or me to that as you never know if any difficulties will arrise.

I've paid for the 25 detectors, but not the shipping cost yet, which will be paid when they know what it is.

So be patient, when i get a figure and can divide it out i'll let every one know how much to send me, that can happen while they are in transit so when they arrive i'll begin shipping those that paid first. I will still keep your place for one if you already notified me.

As of now I have 21 of the 25 spkoen for. Only 4 left avaialble, unless someone backs out.

Still one note: i've planned my annual vacation which has turned into a family reunion with my three brothers, dad and one niece. Can't change it, we already all got tickets. So i'll be unavailable from the 15th to the 22nd to ship any as i'll be out of town. Also a few days prior as I need extra time to get trip packing done and a few days after when i return to catch up on things. I'll do my best if they arrive in that time span but can't make any promises.

Message 839 - Posted: 10 Mar 2012 | 19:08:34 UTC

Funny thing happened today a few minutes ago.

I was working on something and just by chance saw a vehicle stopped out by the mailbox. I usually don't rush out but since I was up and had a free moment, decided to go out. Ended up he was stopped to deliver a package and I met him by the stairs and signed for a package. Lucky me as if I wasn't home he would have left a note and i'd have to go out of my way to get it at the psot office on Monday.

Opened it up and found 25 little black boxes !!!

Each box is intact in one piece, so they survived the crossing of the pond, as i'm told it is called rom the other side.

By coincidence I have just finished notifying everyone to send money only moments before.

I should have the time tomorrow to go get the postal boxes, those are at my job, and get some packing material of some sort, i might have to get creative there. I would have brought stuff home, but I had not checked messages for days and didn't even know that had been sent until last night. I can maybe work on getting these packed up tomorrow, as I usually have more free time on the week-end than during the week.

I have a problem.

I just got the first payment and Paypal deducted a transaction fee of $1.64.

I need to ask everybody contacted who is paying by palpay to add at least that much more, i guess the hight the amount the more fee so they'll take a little more out. add $1.75 to make it $48.00 even and hope that covers it so i don't go broke on this.

If you pay by check you don't need to add any.

I'm recontacting everybody, so between here and pm messages i hope to get everybody before they pay.

Sorry for the confusion, Paypal didn't take fees out before, but it has been a long time since i used it.

Paypal will take it's fee no matter what now, credit card or not, on both personal and business accounts.

It's 2.9% on the total amount + $0.30.

Of course, you can mark it as a gift, and if it comes from your Paypal balance or your checking account, they may not charge the fee, but technically you are lying if you are purchasing something like this...

It's 3.9% + $.30 if it's international.

Thanks for doing this Keith.

Thanks guys.

Sorry but PM's has cut me off now from sending anything even after waiting over 12 hours, I had to send extra messages to everybody after I discovered the PayPal fee. Sorry for any confusion.

I did send the payment for shipping costs to the project and when I did I selected Personal, over purchase, and money owed. It still charged a fee, only 50 cents but gave me the option of payiong that, i guess instead of them taking it out of the amount the receiver got. The Postage was 62.20 GBP which with fee game to 100.60 USD. USD Converts to Euros for less than to GBP. We paid for the sensor converted to Euros.

---

Yes the new revised amount I sent is only 4 cents over, i'll apply that to extra 50 cents I had to pay to send the final payment. as I had already figured that and notified everyone. I think I come out very clsoe on this with everyone in the end. I'm not looking to make money but I don't want to go broke either. A few cents is ok.

for ONE Send $48.00
for TWO Send $90.50

@Zombie - I Have you down for TWO. Send $90.50

@Toby Broom. Thanks for the Payments, sorry to find this out and have you keep paying. I guess that's what happens for being first in line. Your payment ended up 27 cents short. I'll eat that as if you send that much you'll have to add another 35 cents paypal fee. You can if you want but not necessary.

Good News

All packaging done, i nrecord time. I expected to be here all day doing this. I did have to make a special trip to the office to get the USPS boxes, i had those here months ago but seeing it was going to take al ong time to get these, I took the to work to use up. I also picked up a bunch of materials I thought would work.

My intial thought was to cut sheets of cardboard and pack around thinking it would take four pices and a lot of cutting.

By luck the first one I ended up using a piece of cardboard scrap alread cut to about the same wideth of the box and it wrapped around the black box, with a little foam in between. Only had to snip off the end a little and fold some in. This fit very well inside the fold up shipping box, solid as a brick. Some are not as well done, I began to run out of materials but I feel all are well enough packed. This ended up less work than I thought and I had all packed up in 56 minutes (I was thinking several hours). The project had picked the perfect size black box to make this easy.

Now on to labeling, i'll begin those that paid and work on others as payments arrive. Some will go in tomorrows mail so I expect you'll should have them beginning Wednesday or Thursday.

THanks Keith and don't worry over a few pennies. I don't think anyone here will have a fit if they pay an extra 50 cents or whatever to you. On the other hand though, if YOU ended up eating 50 cents times however many packages that WILL add up to some money.

Given all you have done to make this a possibility, it saved a ton of work on the project owners part not having to do a bunch of onezies and twozies packages, and saved us postage as well being local. IMO you should get a little something for your effort.

I shipped five out on Monday. Those started arriving yesterday it appears and I see one person with credits already.

Another two going out today.

For those paying by PayPal, they include your confirmed address and email with the payment. When creating the USPS label there is a way to email a receipt so i've been filling in your email addresses.

I'm waiting for a couple of checks, I'll let you know when yours ship. If you did nopt include your address and/or email with the check, you may want to PM it to me.

Things are going sort of smoothly now, I'm actually glad everyone didn't pay yet. Months ago I had a full supply of ink. Now my printer is telling me the supply is low. I had to order a new cartridge and am hoping this one holds out until it gets here, maybe in the next couple of days. It seems nothing has really gone as planned.

The map Krsysztof pointed you to is the map of all detectors. You won't be on that map until you have completed 1 task but you must also go to the map at the bottom of your host details page (drill down through your account) where you will see your detector as an orangish colored icon on the map, located in Poland, amongst all the other green dots. You might have to zoom in a little. Drag that icon to your location, zoom in as close as you want to your location and keep moving the icon to as close as you want to get to your location. Then click Add Detector below the map and then you'll be the definitively located definite article and your data samples will include your actual latitude and longitude instead of 0,0.

There still have 14 people whom have not contacted me or sent payment.

I will give them one more week.

April 1st (No Fooling) I will put the unclaimed ones up for grabs to anyone else in the USA.

Please wait until I post though before making a request. It will be on a best effort first come first serve basis.

Well i'm sorry but I haven't heard from anybody else on the pre-lsit in two weeks. So i'm putting the unclaimed detectors left up for grabs.

First note: I do plan on buying another batch of 25. So if you miss this batch, you can get in on the next - a new thread will start for that at the appropiate time.

Second note: at this time i cannot accept credit cards, but i found a service that will allow me to process credit card payments, and the fee is not too bad. Since i would not be swiping the card and getting a signature, it is a little higher, they charge more because they figure more risk, but over the fee I found out that paypal charges it is only going to be like 50 cents more per detector which is not bad. I've kind of figured everyone does not have paypal and probally more people have credit cards so this would be easy to do and easier than mailing a check. Details on this will follow with the next batch. I know i can add that to my paypal account, but then still everyone does not use paypal so it still leaves some people out. This other serive is seperate and would allow me to process credit card payments from anybody with a credit card. If anyone is interested it is called http://squareup.com. They send you a card reader and you use it on your smartphone or ipad, both of which i have. A guy I know through work uses it for his business and as he is at jobs on the road is very convienient to get paid at the completion of the job before walking away. I see paypal coming out with a similar device soon.

--

Here's the deal

Post in this thread if you want a detector now. I'll try to monitor and reply on a first come, first serve basis. Watch your PM box !!! I'm guessing some people don't have the setting to get an email notice when you get a PM is why a bunch of people have missed out and not repilied. I'll send you a PM with payment info, as i don't want to post my address and email address publicly and don't want to oversell on sensors and end up ahving to refund money.

The deal is this:

Unclaimed detectors for sale, 12 left !!!

I will begin shipping to those, first pay, first shipped.

You can pay by PayPal or Check/Money Order.

Paypal to: [will be in PM]

Note you must pay from paypal funds or bank account, I do not have the credit card acceptance option on my account. Paypal sends your address with payment so your confirmed address should be your mailing address, if not you can include a note with payment. I will use your email address on file with the payment to have the usps send you a confirmation receipt when it ships.

Check/money order, mail to: I will send once I receive check. Be sure to include a note with email address for receipt. Be sure your address on the check or envelope is your mailing address I can read it off them or write it on the note if you want.

Mail to:
[will be in PM]

---

The amount is
25 Detectors cost 675 Euro which converted to at the time was $925.83 USD
The shipping to me was 62.20 British Pounds which is was $100.60 USD

This comes to $1026.43 for 25 units at 41.06 each

Add $5.15 for US Priority Flat Rate Box (Online price) and add 6 cents for label and ink.

You should reply back to me with a PM if you mail a check to let me know you mialed payment, paypal will notify me for those paying that way.

for mailing a check or money order
Total Due for One is $ 46.27
Total Due for Two is $ 87.33

for payment by paypal the amount is (They subtract $0.30 plus 2.9% fee from amount paid to me on it)
Total Due for One is $ 47.96
Total Due for Two is $ 90.25

Now you see why I waited to collect, conversion rates, different curriecies and postage went up the beginning of the year. I didn't need to collect three payments from everybody. This beats the price I paid before which converted to about 60 bucks for one.

Future batch will be similar price, but i won't know exactly until i pay for them and find out what the conversion rate is on that day. Shipping should be similar so i'll guess on that and i think the next abtch i can collect money in advance of getting the detectors, thus when they arrive jsut ship them out. That will all be covered at a later time in a new thread.
