Message 3219 - Posted: 15 Apr 2015 | 16:05:56 UTC

Hi folks,

I've built my v2.61 kit and also a couple of others for friends, there are some pictures on my website at : http://freespace.virgin.net/gaz_liz.teamamc/RK261HTG/Radkit261.htm

I also bought another kit last month and built it a slightly different way, so the display sits up 4mm higher and is flush with the top of the box, see addendum at the bottom of the above link.

Not sure which I prefer, they're both pretty cool! :-)

Anyway, two things - firstly, I'm getting the hang of building these now, but am surprised that there are still only a handful of v2.61 sensors showing up on the map. Come on, where are you all, I've done four now! If anyone here in the UK is having difficulty, as it does require some fiddly soldering, or if you'd like me to build your kit for you, feel free to message me on here. I'll build your kit for you for 35 pounds plus postage if you send me it (I'll source all the remaining bits), or meet you some way in between if you've already got some bits but got stuck building it.

Secondly, as I now have two working sensors, I'm willing to sell one. The one I've just finished, as in the photos at the bottom of the above link, with the display flush with the top of the lid. Built with a black text on greeny yellow background display and red flashing LED, complete with 50cm USB cable, ready to plug in and start clocking up credits on here. I'd prefer this to go to someone in the UK to keep postage costs down (just under 4 quid at last check), but may send it further afield if you're prepared to pay extra for signed/tracked delivery. I'll part with it for 60 pounds (GBP) if anyone's interested?

Gary.

As it seems far cheaper than ordering an Arduino-to-Raspberry shield, an Arduino sensor plus Geigerteller (see http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=476),
I'd like to know how much it will cost me to let you build me a sensor and send it to the Netherlands (nearest reactor: the little known test facility at the Technical University in Delft).

Hi Dirk,
have you actually got a v2.61 kit and just want to send it to me for building, or do you mean for supplying the kit and building as well?
Thanks,
Gary.

Hi Gary,

No, I haven't yet gotten a v2.61 kit as I was wondering whether I could safe myself the effort of soldering by buying a Raspberry-to-Arduino shield, a Radiation Sensor Board and a Geiger Tube.
But I wouldn't even know if it can be used for the project and I fear that it still needs soldering (at least the tube to the sensor).

I saw the other thread on http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=476 and agree with Norbert, that should work with Radmon but not Radioactive@home. It looks a neat solution if you don't want to solder anything though. The GM tube can be connected with readily available connector cables with a crocodile clip on each end, it doesn't have to be soldered to the board (and I wouldn't advise soldering directly to the GM tube anyway, unless you're used to soldering and happy to replace it if you break it).

Hi Gary,

Well then, back to the original question: how much it will cost me to let you build me a sensor and send it to the Netherlands?
You've done a sterling job on my team mate Chris' sensor and I like to be active on Radioactive@Home too.

Hi Dirk,

well, if you can find a v2.61 sensor kit (one of the last batch which were sold) and send it to me, I'll build it and send you the completed sensor back for 44 GBP (60 Euros), which includes finding the missing parts and postage back to The Netherlands. It may take me about 1 to 2 weeks.

I don't have any of the parts kits myself, you'd need to get hold of one from somebody who bought one and doesn't want it any more, or wait & see if the project admins make some new ones for sale through this site. I can put things together, but I'm unable to make the circuit boards or program the microcontroller chips, they're the important bits that I need. I keep checking eBay in case any more turn up, but haven't seen any recently. There must be a lot of unbuilt v2.61 kits still out there somewhere - there were about a hundred in the batch, and I've only seen about ten appear on the map on here.

Hey Chris, if you don't want the spares, I'll happily take them off your hands, thanks!

I do still have one completed kit as mentioned in my first post above. No takers in UK, so I'm happy to send it to somebody in the EU for 65 GBP (88 Euros) instead. First one to pay gets it! :-) lol

Hi Gary,

I received the sensor today, perfectly packed, and in good working order as well -it's running from my Raspberry Pi2 right next to me.
Next step: the first completed and validated WU, and a place on the map!

Looks like my Raspberry Pi2 developed a slightly corrupted SD-card -it had started some days before the sensor was connected.

First I could not use the mouse, then the Boinc manager would not appear -mouse was back and client was running- and I discovered that plugdev needed rights in order for the sensor to get working.
Made the changes, rebooted: then the client would not start -manager couldn't connect and manually starting client got error 'another instance of Boinc is running'.

Tied it to an experimental AM1 Windows 10 box, waiting for the first results.

why you don't set wu runtime to 0.5 hours ? You see results within 30 minutes...

I have patience, I also run projects where it takes weeks (e.g. RNA world) to complete a WU...

P.S.: I'm on the map :)

Last six WUs errored out with
'Could not find any of the devices listed in sensors.xml: Device communication error'

What do I need to add to sensors.xml? There is no mentioning of a 2.61 sensor in the sensors.xml, it only goes up to 2.60....Might perhaps partly explain the problems people report about the 2.61 kit. But then again: why did it work earlier without the error?

Manually altering the content of 'sensors.xml' does not seem to work: after 'update project' the extra lines about the 2.61 sensor vanish.....

You already try to remove the sensor and plug it in another USB port ?
I had the problem earlier that Windows get the sensor out of control panel.

I had the problem earlier that Windows get the sensor out of control panel.

Just for the sake of it I tried a USB 3.0 port instead of a 2.0 port, Windows now seems to keep seeing the sensor...
