I understand the distance, and the concrete slowing down aspect but, as far as our detectors detecting them is what I am asking.

If I put both of my detectors essentially right next to each other, I should pretty much see the same readings at the same time for both of them right?

Unless im using a small source of gamma, like a smoke detector for example, where you would have to literally be right on the thing just about, if I kept them right next to each other, they should pretty much read the same with the background radiation right?

Is it, the one wave would hit both of them and trigger or is it more like rain where the room may get an inch of rain, but each detector is getting it's inch from seperate drops?

About how big is a gamma ray? or wave?

Ok, let's say I have two detectors placed 5 feet apart.
If a gamma event comes through, will the both see it?

If not, how about a foot apart? an inch apart? on top of each other?

What is the detecting range of one of these?
If the size of the gamma varies, what is about the 'average' size.
Does the detector just count events or does the strength of the event play into it as well?

Just curious.

Thank you

I would keep it around an hour or so. That way if something goes wrong you don't end up losing a bunch of work credits.

Just my opinion.

But if the cosmic ray / particle, once it hits the atmosphere and gets slowed down, might it shed some of it's energy as gamma? Im sure the atmosphere filters out most of it but Id think we might see some at least. Electrons need what 1mEV to shed X rays? I know once you start playing with DC over the 10KV range you are getting into a risk of x rays.

It will be interesting, if we get another solar 'event' Ill try to put my detector outside and see if we can see increase over the time the 'waves' are hitting us.

But gamma is essentially EM right? Im sure the atmosphere would filter it somewhat but im fairly sure that some would get through too right?

I wonder if the detector detects X rays too, and / or cosmic rays?

For what help it may be worth.
I set mine up and wiggled the USB port accidentally, the computer ding donged a few times, signaling that the cable disconnected / reconnected at least once in short time.

The project quit showing me progress although the detector was running. The time was incrementing just no percentage. I restarted boing with no help so finally had to shut down boinc, unplug detector, restart boinc, then replug in detector and now everything is working fine.

I guess my point is, if you get a data glitch between your computer and the detector it may lock out. Try this and see if it helps you.

I just got my detectors up and running today so missed the big show but, with th at. I wonder if anyone has their stuff set up outside or close to the window if you can detect any additional radiation from this solar storm we had?

I would think that with all the electromagnetic energy the sun is throwing at us during these things we should be able to pick up something, or maybe a 'wave' of energy?

Anyone see anything on their detectors?

It worked, I can see the numbers now.
Now im waiting for my location to update on the big map.

Thank you everyone.

Thank you for the reply. Lets see if when the thing sends in it's first data batch and updates it turns the light on. If not ill turn on and off the box and see if that does it.

I got my detector finally, Yaayyy!!

Quick question, I turn it on, it does it's boot up and starts beeping / ticking a bit and appears to be running. After a minute or two the display blanks out but I can hear it still 'ticking' so assume it's working. Is there any way to make the display stay on all the time?

Thanks
Aaron
