Message 1172 - Posted: 26 Jun 2012 | 15:43:55 UTC

Within a few days are going to announce a new collection of orders for our volunteers.
As before, we will collect your order from you for about a month and then proceed to the production of sensors. New batch will be about 250 - 300 pcs.

With this collection, will launch a new model.

Despite the changes on CPU and a few other expensive changes, we managed to keep the price at the same level of 27 Euro.

Also with new release we will publish diagrams and software on our website.

Be patient and give us just few days to organise ;)

I'll be ordering one of those! Looks great!

Going to put it by my window in my office, as I never got around to relocating the sensor I have in my workshop.

Looks quite long, not that that is a problem for me. Dimensions? Is that a 'normal' USB connection of one of the smaller types?

Oh, someone remind me the minimum version required to run this project please?

Cheers,

Al.

Message 1174 - Posted: 26 Jun 2012 | 18:56:59 UTC - in response to Message 1172.

As I definitely want to have one of those myself again, I could organize again the German orders.

Here's for my fellow countrymen and -women:

BM version? 6.x?
Our detector doesn't have any special requirements...
Also, our developer have running it with... NAS!

Also, works with RaspberryPi under Debian for ARM...

I guess people who already "pre-signed" a few months ago (like myself :p) will be included, right?

What's the minimum Android working with it? And does it have a battery, so that no external power is needed from the USB?

Good question...
We still haven't android app ready to use (mainly, because we still wait for VID and PID numbers from Microchip) and the only person who have enough knowledge to do it (NativeBOINC author) is really busy with his other work.
As I have checked at the moment, new detector get enough power from my tablet to work and is recognised in 4.0.3 systems. Doesn't work with Android lower than 3.2 (as USB communication under 2.3.6 not support full USB standards).

Obviously when we get Radioactive@Home Android application done we will publish it source as well.

It's just some feedback - will not exists on production firmware.
But, Ryszard will release a testing application for debugging purposes - based on it maybe somebody will write something interesting?

Hi, I am new to the project and would like to pick up a detector. I just have a couple of questioins.

Do you ship to Canada? If you do, do you accept payment from Paypal? I can work around the The Paypal issue if you do not accept payment from them.

I would like to get in on this order and get a detector. I sent you a PM a few days ago about this.

Thanks in advance,

Stone

I'm not an admin of this project, but there is already one user in Canada (not me though), and I paid for my sensor via Paypal.

So I'm guessing you'll be ok :)

Yes, if I had checked my e-mail earlier, I would have known that too. I have been quite busy with the doctors this week. Nothing serious, just maintenancce! hehe

I am not the best when it comes to reading e-mails, I am used to using the PMs and the forums for a lot of this stuff. I will get better at doing it.

I used to work in IT and was married to my e-mail - lived and died by it so to speak, so now I don't work, I am awful about checking my e-mail...as I said I will keep a closer eye on it now I know it's used by more then one or two BOINC projects that send out automated messages when you have had an issue with the path to your Java install, or something like that.

I guess I better set up a better profile and put in my forum picture if I am going to be spending any time on the forums. I am very excited to be involved in this project - I live within 60 KMs of two nuclear power stations and I am curious about the conditions here in Toronto, not to mention the chance to help on another science project.

Looking forward to getting all set up and going on this. Hope you are planning on making this a long term study, I think this project has a lot of relavence in the world we live in today. My father was a nuclear engineer building plants all over the world when I was a teenager. At one point I lived within 3 to 5 KMs of the cores of multiple power stations for a year, that always made me nervous.

Thank you for the info ChertseyAl, and thanks for the e-mail Krzysztof, I sent you a brief reply.

Thanks again,

Stone

I'm sorry for delay, but my (one) week holiday I spent mainly in hospitals. Now everything should by ok and we will start orders collection soon :)

Answering all your questions - yes, we will ship detectors to (I think) every country, but quantity are restricted to 300pcs (well, about 200 are already reserved for people registered before and groups/teams). :)

I am so sorry to hear that you got sick on your one week off. That's not good. I have a long term injury from the Army and I am 100% disabled, so I see a lot of doctors. I hope whatever happened with you is clearing up quickly and that you are feeling better now. I am so sorry to hear that your one week vaction was spent in hospitals and with doctors. It's not a good thing.

As for 300 units, I would just like to get the one for the one machine I am planning on running the project on...hehe Actually I have about 6 or 7 machines currently running BOINC on them right now, but I can only afford to get the one detector for this project, for now.

I am also rebuilding another 6-8 PCs just to run BOINC on. I have a friend who was running a retail PC store, but he went out of business, so I got some really good deals on a bunch of desktop PCs. It's just going to take me some time to build them up into working machines due to my injuries though.

Will you be sending out emails about the ordering, or posting up a new thread on the boards? I want to know where to watch out for the announcement if at all possible.

Thanks,

Stone

We have collected already about 300 orders through form provided before (currently switched off) and also I have managed all yours team/national batch orders.
Tomorrow I will send to registered persons confirmation email with bank account number and exact amount (including postage fee) to transfer.
Also, we decide to make about 100 additional detectors using our own money and we will sell it with this batch when we assembly all detectors.

Preparing everything and sending to our volunteers will take about 8-10 weeks (with possible small delay as usually).
Is very hard to give time plan as we can't predict how long time it's take to collect orders and we still doesn't have everything confirmed from previously registered persons.
I.e. In form sent by email I have 358 detectors as "confirmed" but to bank account and PayPal arrive only money for about 100 detectors. So we need to wait a week or so to count orders to order right amount of PCB's, Geiger tubes and LCD's (which parts are longest to wait for or most expensive).

Once you get the payments for the detectors, and the new form filled out (as per the e-mail that was sent out), will you be sending out a confirmation of payment received? I am just wondering.

Thanks in advance,

Hello

I am from Russia. I want to order one detector. You can send a detector in Russia? How much will it cost (shipping + detector)? It is advisable that you sent the detector with the tracking number. Since our mail works very badly. The parcels without tracking number are often lost or delivered in 3-4 months.

I just got two reminder mails from r@h, that I ordered 1 and 0 detectors, and that I have to confirm it.
I already have paid, confirmed, got the money transfer confirmed and gave you my address for 39 detectors, did you just press some wrong button?

I said to my "customers" to simply ignore that message.

Any news about the current batch?
How long will it take until the first ones are shipped, and how long for the last ones?

Have you any sending policy? I mean - for example - first goes locations with a lowest density of sensors, "border" regions - etc?

Hey Krzysztof,

How are you doing? A little stressed out with this new batch of detectors going out, I bet...

I am ready, and waiting for the detector, and eager to get going with the project!

Will you be sending out e-mails when the detectors ship? Or will we just get them when we get them? I understand it depends on other suppliers and on conditions that you do not control 100% of. I am just wondering...

Respectively,

Stone

Good news :)
About end next week we will start sending detectors (v3) to you.

We will send it in small batches as person who assembly parts send it to us in 30-50pcs sets every week (starting on next).

Currently we have received "test" series of 30pcs - we will do some quick tests to be sure that everything is assembled correctly.

Ps. Are you find that we haven't delay on this batch??? I'm surprised ;)

Hi all.
Sorry all for the delay in the shipment of detectors. We are trying to finish the production as soon as possible, to start shipping. Not everything goes as planned. It can be difficult to reconcile private life, work and volunteer work related to rad@h. 6 November will start mass shipping.
Today we will present how we produce sensors. It's really a complicated process.

Please let us know when we can order the new batch. I would like to participate in this (Alabama, USA). Also, wouldn't it be possible to continuously produce the detectors, stockpile them, and take orders as they came in? If you spread a word about it in Japan, the demand for these should be mind boggling. I see only one right now on the map.

One more thing. Can one of the new batch sensors be ordered as a kit or be able to be taken apart? I would like to experiment with alternative GM tubes (off line and off grid only).

Also, If I purchase a few as gifts for friends, will they be able to register the detectors with the BOINC network separately from my own account?

Thanks and looking forward to the new batch.

I know you're volunteers, and I know it's probably tough to get it all done, but I would nevertheless appreciate, if you were a bit more forthcoming in regard of estimated times of delivery.

I paid in June, and we were told it would take about 8-10 weeks, perhaps a bit delay as usual. That would have been some time in September. As I'm responsible for a batch of 39 detectors for Germany, the others always ask me, why there still is no detector ready. I simply can't tell them anything, as you remain mainly silent. No reason given for this excessive delay, no new estimated delivery time given, next to no information at all.

With good explanations we will probably still be grumbling a bit, but as we are all just volunteers ourselves, we would probably just say "Shit happens", but without any communication from the project, there's some anger building up.

At that time only one person has theme of detectors on his head... Unfortunately, this person now has a lot of responsibilities at work and do not knead with producing sensors. He spends every free moment at montage and sensors will be for sure. I'll try to ask him for a schedule of shipments and let you know.

Message 1493 - Posted: 4 Dec 2012 | 22:26:54 UTC

First of all I would like to apologise to everyone for such a massive delay.

When we started collecting money for 3rd batch of detectors we decided, a little too enthusiastically, to release a new revision of the detector. We've had mastered the manufacturing process for ver.2. Version 3 had been released in a small prototypical batch. Version 3 also appealed to many people visually, and this fact weighed heavily on our decision. Nobody however realised how long would it take to prepare a longer production run. There also were a couple of issues that were discovered in beta version, that also needed to be taken care of.

Another cause for the delay was our attempt to reduce manufacturing costs. We do all the production on our own and some processes, especially preparation of transformers and chassis takes quite a lot of time. The chassis looks interesting, but it requires processing on a CNC machine. Caps require reaming and the openings need to be drilled through. Lastly, the labeling sticker needs to be applied and a hole for LCD display needs to be cut out. The printed circuit boards are also manufactured by us. Reputable manufacturing workshops demanded prohibitively high prices for production of such relatively small batch, with profitability threshold at 1000+ boards. Smaller and cheaper workshops on the other hand had high defect rates. PCBs manufactured by them had short circuits, rotated elements and overheated laminates. We decided therefore to manufacture PCBs by ourselves using a template for application of soldering paste and an oven for actual soldering. This too proved to be difficult at first. Too much paste on microcontroller's pins caused short-circuits. In effect I've had to remove the processor from each PCB, clean it, and solder it again (here's another delay). Before installing the PCB in chassis, it's edges need grinding, so that it fits in the pipe.

In other words, a couple of unplanned issues summed up into a bigger delay. On top of that, I planned to work on detectors after my day job. I assumed I'd have to work 8 hours a day, but my employee pressed me hard, and I often had to devote more than 10 hours a day to my job. There were days where I would start at 7 a.m. and finish at 2 a.m. the following day. During such periods there was no chance to do anything with detectors, sometimes even for a week or so.

How I am going to amend the situation: I am in no way backing away from the project. I commited to it, and I'm going to finish what I started. Trust me, there is still quite a lot of work with these detectors. Things at work start coming back to normal, and I can now expect to have a couple of hours each day to work on them. I'm planning to take a couple of days off too. I also started to organise a team of people who will help me to press forward. I also need to evaluate if I can utilise Szopler's and kotfryc's eagerness to help. Just today I have prepared a software update which enables displaying on the LCD converter's voltage, USB voltage and USB communication status. That should help in debugging if any users report problems. It's enough to hold down the button during powering up, and debug data will be displayed instead of 'Radioactive@home'. This update also delayed the deliveries as I didn't want to ship detectors without any means of diagnosing them.

Schedule:

Approximately 45 detectors are completed, 40 PCB's are ready without transformers and waiting to be tested. Another 50 PCBs with RC elements and 50 empty PCBs. We are also expecting a shipment of another 100 PCBs from the manufacturer. I have a dozen or so transformers ready for installation. Next Sunday I plan on manufacturing a number of those, as I managed to optimise this process recently. I declare to make 10 daily, but I want to do as much as 20 if possible. However, there might be days when I'm travelling due to my daytime job (Dec 6th and 7th). Next Saturday I plan to devote entirely to detectors' production. Having two other people to help I expect to do at least 40 pcs. I am also constantly looking for ways to improve our processes.

Last, but not least, please hold your emotions. This does not work well on morale. I admit I screwed up, and I am doing whatever I can to do my part. Please take notice, that we do not profit from manufacturing detectors, we donate our time and try to make detectors as cheap as possible, so that everyone can afford them. Our detectors are much more sophisticated than QCN detectors, which consist of a cable, a chassis and a PCB with an accelerometer and a couple of elements.

From now on I am going to provide you with daily status updates.

Getting back to soldering USB cables.

Thanks for that information, I very much appreciate your effords.
If you provide more status updates about this, we all will pat you on the back virtually probably on a daily base, if it will not hinder your soldering.

I'll forward this to my "customers", so they will know how you work, and why it took you longer than first thought. Methinks it's a general problem with volunteer projects and initial enthusiasm, that's been met by the hard reality of the RL.

Not that I ever expected this overeager sentence to be true, and it's absolutely no problem to live without this daily news, but I would appreciate a weekly update, probably after the (work-)weekends.

I don't want to be too demanding, and I appreciate it, that you update the sensors to the new, better VID/PID scheme before sending them, and thus delaying them even more, I just would like to be a bit better informed.

Ryszard,

It's Stone, from Canada, and I just wanted you to know that I have received the detector that you have sent to me. I have attached it to the computer that I will be using it on for this project, and everything is going well so far!

As of June 16 2013, I have turned in 21 WU tasks so far, and everything seems to be running just great. I have added it to the map, and gotten it setup in the preferences.

Thank you for all the hard work that you have put into this project to get it going.

Thanks again,

Stone

Hello, I joined the forum to learn about this project and want to add a sensor to my station. I sent some emails out hoping to get some answers but yet to receive any replys at all. How can someone purchase, obtain a sensor so I can join in. I live in Massachusetts in the USA, near the border to New Hampshire and if you look at the map, I have 4 reactors around me. I would very much appreciate if someone could tell me how I can get a sensor to I can set up one here at my location. It would fill in an area that is not covered here but there are others further away and mine would fill in this spot... So I post here on the forum hoping for answers....thank you in advanced Frank

You can buy anytime (and directly in US) a standalone detector GMC-300 directly from the company manufacturing it:

http://www.gqelectronicsllc.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4542

It is more expensive, but you have at the same time a portable, battery operated standalone detector for general use...

It is now supported in radioactiveathome project (still in beta, but already working...).

See the corresponding thread in news: http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=195

P.S. It is of no use to be upset of not having received personalized ordering info: All the information you request has been already posted here (and several times...), please read the messages.....

Hi,
I'm a new here, I'm from Italy and I temporarily added a sensor yesterday using a GMC-300.
Unfortunately this device get quite hot staying continuously connected to USB power and this is what happened to another user after 3 weeks:

http://commodore.fi/gmc_300_plus_pwrsupply.jpg

For this reason I'm just sending data for few hours/day for now but I would be happy to send more time/data using an official detector as in my zone there are no other detectors... May I be added in next volunteers detectors order?

Hi, in that forum is just the owner of the broken device to propose the idea of removing the battery but he does not tell if really tried to do it or not. The GMC manufacturer just answered to him advising to replace the broken battery without commenting about his idea of removing it. Also even if the device could work correctly in USB mode without the battery I think that removing it the device would be hot the same after few hours and opening the cover the warranty would be lost... This is the reason I think to join the project with an official detector is a better idea considering that the GMC costs about 200eur with shipping and custom costs and for this reason is not a good idea to risk to broke it for too many hours under USB power...

Ok, so I am back to try this again after 2 attempts over a year. How does it look for getting one of these detectors? I have tried twice over a year and no luck, no answers, no replies and seems that alot of postings are getting pretty old and with no answers. I would like very much to join, but will need a sensor to do this. So, the main question is, how are these looking and any better chance of getting one now after all this time has past. Thank you Frank

I also would appreciate some communication to users, have waited over 12 months and very little info in that time and still no sensor available.

All thou these sensors seem to be nice, but hard to get, perhaps, since a lot of us have multiple geiger counters now in use, maybe we could just use them. Find out how to send data up to this map then we could all get on the map and really start showing our data for all to see before its too late to catch something. I am uploading now to 3 sites and would like to start here as well since here we can see a nice graph of data and any trending....

I just signed up for this project and would love to get two sensors whenever they become available again. I noticed that I missed the last batch by a couple of weeks. Is there any way that I can get on a list to get an email or other notification the next time you order a batch of sensors. I'm willing to assemble a kit or take a fully assembled device.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums to the last few members who posted above.

To start off, the best way to find out about potential future orders is to check the news forum periodically (unless admins state otherwise). Currently, there is no "waiting list" for future orders.

Generally, a post is made when they are gearing up to take (pre) orders.

Right now, to my knowledge, the organizers are awaiting for shipments of some of the remaining parts for the kits, and making sure all is good before shipping them out.

Hello Krzysztof
im happy that you are again here.

Maby you can tell some about the new sensor that you postet last year in June.

I`m still Interested to purchase one of the new sensors.

Regards, Tamara

The new batch is problematic at the moment.
On one (brighter) side, Ryszard Korczyk have nearly prepared batch of 100 detectors, in other side - he have absolutely no time to finish it...

At the moment I can't tell you when the new batch will be available :/

Hi there!
I live in the United Kingdom.
In a place that is (regretfully) just in a half way between Bradwell and Sizewell nuclear power plants. I hope that this location may be interesting to you.
I work in the "internet business". I have got my server (on Centos) running at all times.
I would love to join your project. I would gladly purchase one of your detectors. I know that the usual price is about 27 euros. I would gladly pay a little bit more if necessary.
Please kindly answer at enkidu@enkidu-wd.o.uk

I am from Toruń. You may answer in Polish if you would like to.

Unfortunately for you, the current batch of 100 has already been pre-ordered, and paid for in advance, by other individuals who have also waited for a chance to buy a detector. This leaves two options:

- Wait for them to have another batch, and monitor the forums here regularly. When it comes close to the time that a new batch of detectors will be released, notice is made, and pre-orders are opened up.

- There is a thread in another forum here, for getting a pre-purchased detector to work with the project. This is however a lot more expensive then the detectors that are developed here...

if i can get a layout and a parts list i go and get my own stuff and assemble it

it would even be better if we could contact the pcb manufacturer by ourselves and start ordering complete pcb's

the manufacturer could hold the order until he has a batch of 100 or 200 and then send em out and i m pretty sure we could get them to put the smd and chips on it as well

then nobody would have to wait ages to get one of those detectors

just an idea

All data are available, just search it on main site or forum...
Or, just follow a link:
http://radioactiveathome.org/files/Rad-firmware.zip
There is not only firmware but all required data including PCB layout...
